Spontaneity and I have always been like oil and water, but on this particular morning, I awoke with a sudden craving for breakfast in Johor. With newfound determination, I hastily washed, shaved, and geared up for the ride. As I pressed the starter button on my trusty steed, I could feel the thrill of an uncharted journey ahead.

The ride was surprisingly smooth, and my fears of the infamous Saturday traffic jam vanished like dust in the wind as I cruised across the causeway.

Breezing through customs, I parked, switched to my roaming network, and entered my destination into Google Maps: Yit Foh Wan Tan Mee.

A fleeting temptation for roti canai crossed my mind, but I quickly remembered it was the fasting month, and such shops would likely be closed.

With an eager tap on “Start” and a twist of the throttle, I embarked on the final stretch to the eatery. Just as the shop opened its doors, I arrived, right on time.

Soon after I placed my order, a familiar sight from my childhood appeared before me. The vibrant colours, artful presentation, and enticing aromas transported me back in time, as if the universe had conspired to reunite me with this long-lost dish.

Eagerly, I mixed the noodles with the sauces and savoured a hearty, slurpy mouthful, instantly tasting nostalgia. There’s something magical about the pork lard in the dish; it unlocks the essence of flavours, creating a symphony of taste as it mingles with your saliva.

The noodles’ satisfying crunch was evidence of perfect cooking, devoid of the sogginess that plagues overcooked noodles.

The char siew, with its classic red hue, was reminiscent of my childhood; slightly dry, but evoking memories that complemented the dish perfectly.

The plump, juicy wantons danced in their clear soup, waiting to be devoured. The moment they met my taste buds, I knew I was indulging in succulent, well-marinated minced meat.

As I savoured the final morsels of my nostalgic breakfast, gratitude washed over me. This unexpected journey had reminded me of the beauty of spontaneity and the power it has to unlock incredible experiences and cherished memories. With a contented smile, I finished my meal and relished the last drops of warm, comforting soup.

Hopping back on my two-wheeled companion, I took a moment to bask in the simple joy of a shared meal with a treasured memory. The impromptu trip to Johor had not only rekindled a taste of my childhood but had also inspired me to embrace life’s surprises and the importance of veering off the beaten path. Fuelled by a newfound sense of adventure, I revved the engine, pulled on my gloves, and set off for home, daydreaming about where my next spontaneous escapade might lead.
